Happy Halloween

It’s that time of year again! Crunchy brown leaves litter the ground below us, the temperature has begun to drop (giving us all an excuse to bust out the sweaters and jumpers) and of course, HALLOWEEN!

This is possibly one of the best times of the year, and my favourite time of the year, because it’s now socially acceptable to dress up, eat a ton of junk food and just binge watch a lot of spooky Halloween movies on repeat.

Last year, I wrote about how my anxiety and Halloween aren’t the best mix and how, because of this, the season can be spoilt for me. Feel free to check it out here. So this year I thought I would be a bit more cheerful and write about my favourite things to do at Halloween!

The first thing that I like to do at Halloween is watch spooky movies. Now when I say spooky movies, I don’t mean horror movies like It or Nightmare on Elm Street. I watched about five minutes of each of those movies and it was enough to traumatise me for months. I value my sleep too much to watch to watch horror movies, especially on Halloween. No, when I say spooky movies, I mean wholesome family friendly Halloween movies. Yes I’m a wimp but I would much prefer to watch Hocus Pocus, Nightmare Before Christmas and Addams Family over horror movies any day. Just the idea of curling up under a nice thick blanket, lighting some candles and watching wholesome Halloween movies with a hot chocolate in my hands makes my heart feel all warm and fuzzy.

Another thing I like to do at this time of year is to go around my local area and seeing all of the different decorations people have. Some houses have simple but effective decorations like cobwebs on the hedges and pumpkins in the windows, some houses have nothing (like mine) and others completely knock it out of the ball park. For example, one year I walked past a house that went the whole hog. They had cobwebs everywhere, spiders hanging down from the trees and a ‘graveyard’ in their garden complete with a fog machine. But the best bit was that they had a Headless Horseman statue at the front of their house, which turned out to be the owner dressed up who would follow trick-or-treaters to his door and scare the living daylights out of them!

A final thing that I like to do at Halloween is dress up. When I was small I loved dressing up, usually as a witch, because it gave me a sense of fun and pretend. I would make up characters and stories based on what I was dressing up as. As I got older, I enjoyed getting dressed up to go to Halloween parties. A memorable one being my friend hosting a party for us all, for which we all dressed up in costume, and then bailed on the party halfway through to get a McDonalds. Let me tell you, a zombie, a witch and a Wonder Woman drag costume in a queue at McDonalds sounds like an anecdote for either an amazing or terrible joke. Even now I dress up, not as much, but I still find “spooky” tops and white makeup to wear for when the kids come trick-or-treating.

Luckily for me, I’m away for Halloween this year so I don’t have to worry too much about trick-or-treaters this year or having to open the door to people. But you can bet I’ll still end up looking at decorations and costumes, and ending the night curled up under a blanket watching movies.

That’s all for this week guys, I hope you enjoyed it. What are you guys doing for Halloween this year? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

Happy Halloween!

An Anxious Gal
